Up to four players could explore the Mushroom Kingdom together, but they would have to be in the same room. When Super Mario 3D World released on the Wii U in 2013, it only offered local couch co-op. While Nintendo hasn't always offered the smoothest of online experiences in terms of matchmaking and connection quality, Super Mario 3D World is a ray of hope for future Nintendo Online projects. The Nintendo Switch port of Super Mario 3D World looks to have promising online functionality, especially when compared to Nintendo's last online Mario project.
